Twig selection on mountain birch Betula pubescens by winter‐feeding willow grouse Lagopus lagopus in a subarctic forest

نویسندگان

چکیده

In a subarctic forest at Kvaløya, northern Norway, willow grouse Lagopus lagopus fed snow level by clipping bits of twigs from mountain birch Betula pubescens during winter. Birch has two types ending in terminal bud: long with smooth bark, and short rings thicker bark. The selected ringed above despite surplus the forest. Ringed had more bark cm −1 twig length higher relative bark/wood ratio than twigs. Smooth growth nodes that increased diameter inwards tip. Because non‐linear relation between area circumference circle, decreased for each node. Although being able to clip much twigs, 90% clipped were ≤ 2 mm diameter. It is concluded optimally on winter selecting minimize fibrous wood intake.

Ruffed Grouse Bonasa umbellus habitat selection in a spatially complex forest: evidence for spatial constraints on patch selection

Drumming display sites of male Ruffed Grouse Bonasa umbellus serve as activity centres and occur in a variety of forest types and age classes. We used a case-control study design and model selection to evaluate a set of predictions about habitat constraints placed upon Grouse given the habitat where their breeding season activity centres were located. We located 110 individual Grouse activity c...

Sámi reindeer herders’ perspective on herbivory of subarctic mountain birch forests by geometrid moths and reindeer: a case study from northernmost Finland

INTRODUCTION Geometrid moths and semi-domesticated reindeer are both herbivores which feed on birch leaves in the subarctic mountain birch forests in northern Fennoscandia. The caterpillars of autumnal and winter moths have episodic outbreaks, which can occasionally lead to extensive defoliation of birch forests. Earlier studies have shown that reindeer have a negative effect on the regeneratio...

Remote Sensing of Mountain Birch Forest Biomass and Leaf Area Index Using ASTER Data

Suitability of ASTER satellite data for estimating biomass and LAI for mountain birch forests was investigated. The field data consisted of 124 plots surveyed in northernmost Finland in July 2004. The statistical relationships between the field measurements and ASTER reflectances were modelled using canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and reduced major axis (RMA) regression. The models were ap...

Estimating aboveground tree biomass and leaf area index in a mountain birch forest using ASTER satellite data

Biomass and leaf area index (LAI) are important variables in many ecological and environmental applications. In this study, the suitability of visible to shortwave infrared advanced spaceborne thermal emission and reflection radiometer (ASTER) data for estimating aboveground tree and LAI in the treeline mountain birch forests was tested in northernmost Finland. The biomass and LAI of the 128 pl...

The impact of climate change on ecosystem carbon dynamics at the Scandinavian mountain birch forest-tundra heath ecotone.

Changes in temperature and moisture resulting from climate change are likely to strongly modify the ecosystem carbon sequestration capacity in high-latitude areas, both through vegetation shifts and via direct warming effects on photosynthesis and decomposition. This paper offers a synthesis of research addressing the potential impacts of climate warming on soil processes and carbon fluxes at t...
